about

This CD was issued in April of 2006 and is now available via bandcamp. This is not a new release, nor is it a reissue. We will not be selling the digital version of this, as you an obtain that directly from Brian Grainger (Mr. Milieu himself) here : milieumusic.bandcamp.com/album/beyond-the-sea-lies-the-stars

You may stream as much as bandcamp allows and if you would like a physical copy, that is what we are now offering.

Beyond the Sea was pressed in 2006 in a run of approximately 505 copies.

Here is Brian's take on the album :

Originally issued on a CD edition of 505 copies at Infraction Records in 2006. BTSLTS was a nearly accidental album in the making, with recording sessions taking place during a two-day stretch of consumption and sleep deprivation. Largely a loosely planned conceptual experiment, BTSLTS utilized a unique system of creating entire tracks from single tape loops of carefully sampled orchestral vinyl, juxtaposing them in dozens of different ways to create flowing and hypnotic compositions. Due to the large amount of tape hiss layered onto the mix with each subsequent iteration of the loops, the music adopted a nautical atmosphere similar to the washed out sounds one might hear while floating out at sea, completely disconnected from any landmass. This album is a landmark piece among the Milieu oeuvre, representing a first step into the textural ambient works that the Milieu name would come to be associated with today, and enduring the test of passing time as a recording that seems to come from no era, no actual space, with no author. It simply seems to exist.
